War heritage and battlefields
Throughout history the rich and prosperous Low Countries have often been the ‘battlefield of Europe’ being caught up between the British, the French and the Germans. Many of Europe’s infamous battles were fought in ‘Flanders’, which was a county stretching over the current countries of Belgium, France and the Netherlands. Visit Waterloo to see where Napoleon Bonaparte was decisively defeated, experience the Great War at the battlefields of Ypres and Passchendaele or explore the battlefields of Bastogne or Arnhem.
Interested in fortifications? Then the many medieval castles, 16th and 17th century fortified towns, 19th century artillery forts and 20th century bunkers are on your bucket list.
